For those of you who are Tolkien fans and ebook readers: The Kindle ebook of Sauron Defeated (History of Middle Earth, Book 9) is currenty on sale for $1.99.

Which leads me to the odd question: I checked to see if any of the other volumes of History of Middle Earth were currently on sale, and saw that Morgoth's Ring (Book 10) isn't currently available as a Kindle book in the US, which is just strange. If it was the last book in the series, I could see it — maybe they hadn't gotten around to formatting that one for Kindle yet — but 11 and 12 are available. It's just strange and random.

ETA: In case you were wondering about other volumes possibly being on sale: The Return of the Shadow (Book 6) is currently $5.99, everything else is full price.

ETA2: Apparently Morgoth's Ring is available on Kindle in the US, but the link from the History of Middle Earth series page takes you to a page for Morgoth's Ring that erroneously shows it as not being available. If you want it, you have to search for it manually rather than going to it from the series page. How dumb.

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday, to those of you who celebrate!

Yesterday was a L.'s 22nd birthday. We had a good celebration for her. She picked White Castle as her birthday dinner and a rewatch of the The Super Mario Brothers Movie as her birthday movie. She wanted a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and I was able to find a copy at a local Gamestop for her, and she was thrilled with that. When we went to pick out her birthday cake, she found several other foods that she wanted, so we got those as well, which was really good — it's always been hard to find foods that she wants to eat, so it's hard to keep her weight in a healthy range, so it's always good to when she finds new foods that appeal to her.

But of course because yesterday was L.'s birthday, I had the worst mental health day I've had in quite a while. My depression has been gradually getting worse (it could just be my brain, could be the new antiseizure medicine, could be a combo of the two), but yesterday it really smacked me down. After a little while I was able to perk up some and put on a brave front for the rest of the day, but it's bad enough that I'm going to talk to my doctor about going back on antidepressants. Today is less bad, so at least that's something.

Anyway, hope you're all doing well. Take care.

My IRL friend Blurr has joined DW! He posts about videogames, anime, and other cool stuff at [personal profile] radiokomorebi so if you've got similar interests, feel free to take a gander. I've been trying to bring more IRL friends to Dreamwidth (for my own selfish reasons: I don't like the social media sites they're on and want to convert them to mine). Every such success shall spur me to never stop trying!

A major milestone for L.

There are so many milestones that mark the various social and legal phases of transition from childhood to adulthood. L. has just hit another one — possibly the final one, although I'm sure another one will pop up to hit us right in the feels when we least expect it.

Tomorrow is L.'s 22nd birthday, which marks the point that her pediatrician will no longer see her. So yesterday was L.'s final visit with her pediatrician. She got her yearly physical, got a recommendation for a new PCP, and got to say good-bye to the doctor who's seen her grow up. It was a surprisingly emotional event.

Fountain pen geekery

A couple of days I ordered a Hong Dian M1 fountain pen. For those of you who didn't follow the link, it's an aluminum travel-travel fountain pen that's just over 4 inches long when closed. This is the third travel-sized fountain pen I've bought, and if I'm not happy with this one, then I'm going to write off travel-sized fountain pens entirely.

Anyway, it arrived today, and it looked great, so of course I had to fill it so I could see how it writes. I had a bottle of Noodler's waterproof ink that hadn't really worked with my Lamy Safaris, so I decided to try it with the Hong Dian. And it might have worked, except that the converter wasn't fully installed, so when I tried to fill it, then pen fell off the converter and into the bottle of ink. So I carried the bottle of ink into the bathroom, got a paper bowl, and poured the ink into the bowl so I could get the pen out. Once I had the pen out and cleaned, I tried pouring the ink from the bowl back into the bottle, but my hand slipped and I ended up pouring the whole bottle down the sink.

After cleaning the sink, I installed the converted and filled the pen with Pilot Iroshizuku ink. It worked well, and I'm very happy with it so far.

Also in pen news, Lamy has introduced the 2026 Special Edition Safaris. Apparently their theme for this year is "1983," because the colors of fluorescent yellow and fluorescent pink.

I began bleeding around 8.30 in the morning. I got a new icon to represent moontime, isn't it amazingly apt? :D

I recently found out that someone in my city makes OEKO-TEX certified biodegradable sanitary pads (so they've been third party tested free of a bunch of harmful chemicals). She's been doing it for 6 years and I only found out about it now, but I'm happy I found out about it at all! She's using the profits to combat period poverty in my state, and to fund research into menstrual health.

She offered to deliver the pads to me via a dropoff service, but since it's within my city I said I'd come by and pick them up. Along with the pads she gave me a feast of mangoes from the tree in her yard! She said she was going away with her family for the summer, and was taking all the mangoes down from the tree beforehand so that they wouldn't rot and fall in her absence.

It was so sweet and generous and made my month!

Cozy fantasy anthology!!!!

The cozy fantasy anthology that I'm part of is out now! You'll be able to read my story, Dollshops & Deathmages, and four others which all have the theme of forced proximity. You can get the anthology for free here. It's free because it's a reader magnet (so in exchange for getting the book, you'll be signing up for the author newsletters of the authors featured in the anthology, but you can unsubscribe later if you want to.)

Dollshops & Deathmages is about Melna, who crafts dolls and prefers them to people, and Clariel, a deathmage who is isolated because of his profession. They get trapped together in Melna's giant dollhouse, which could be disastrous given they're both (involuntary) habitual loners. But Melna is surprised that Clariel doesn't think dolls are frivolities like other men she's known, and Clariel is surprised that Melna doesn't think he's lame for wanting a doll of his own. And both of them are surprised that sometimes someone specific is nice company, even if you are stuck together.

I got the anthology onto my Kobo and started reading it at once, and of course, found two typos in my own story that I didn't catch before despite my previous editing and proofreading. It's some comfort to me that after the anthology has run its course, I can re-release my story separately, on its own. I'll take the chance to correct these then. If they niggle me in the back of my mind meanwhile, I'll have to live with that :/

I'm especially excited to read Thea Hawthorne's contribution to the anthology, because I've read some of her other work which was atmospherically cozy-spooky and had deep yet unobtrusive worldbuilding. I'm looking forward to the other stories to discover some new-to-me authors, too. Most of the fiction I read these days leans cozy, my nervous system right now prefers it. So I'd like to find more cozy authors. On that note, let me know your cozy fantasy recommendations! I've read the classics like Legends & Lattes, and I have my favourite authors whose backlist I peruse, like Celia Lake and Stephanie Burgis. I'd also love cozy recs without fantasy; I recently read D. E. Stevenson's Miss Buncle's Book and enjoyed that a lot.

The other day on Facebook I read a post that was a repost of an earlier conversation from Tumblr (I'm sure you've all seen this sort of thing). Anyway, the topic was a discussion of whether or not a vampire policeman (a la Forever Knight) could use a judicial warrant to force you could grant them permission to enter your house. The discussion seemed to divide into two camps:

  1. Yes, they can.
  2. No, they can't, because the permission forced from you by the warrant is not a true expression of your will.

Recently I've been reading Seanan McGuire's October Daye series (highly recommend, if you haven't read them), which contain a lot of this sort of verbal jiggery-pokery tied into the magic system. This got me to thinking further about the vampire policeman problem and how, as the person in the house, it seems like there's got to be some combination of words that you can say which will simultaneously keep you out of trouble with human law (by honoring the validity of the warrant) while at the same time protecting yourself from the vampire (by indicating to the vampire that you do not freely give permission for them to enter your house), and which further could be stated in such a way that a bystander who is not aware of the existence of vampires/fairies/etc. would not find anything amiss in what you said. I was mulling this over while doing some chores and listening to some music when the Grateful Dead's "Trucking" came on and (in my opinion) handed me the answer on a silver platter[^1]: "If you've got a warrant, I guess you're gonna come in." It simultaneously acknowledges that the warrant grants the power of entry and fails to grant your open personal permission to enter.

[^1] Upon writing it here, I'm wondering if "on a silver platter" has any relevance to faerie. Expect a post on that in the future.

Greetings, friends. Today for [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth I bring you not a Kingdom of Knuffel avatar, but a Wild Knuffel. Wild Knuffel are adoptables made by users, for users! Anyone who wants to try their hand at art and use the Knuffel base to draw on can create one, and submit them for release. Once released, other users can adopt them.

Here's one made by user HanafuruLove. When I told her that I'd adopted him, she saw that I'd named him 'Too Cool for Skool' and she found that hilarious

It's possible to click on the preview box above if you're curious about seeing him in his full glory (all the details HanafuruLove added to him!) or if you want to try feeding and playing with him. I love his tattoos, piercings and of course, his skateboard. The expression on his face speaks volumes

some new stuff:

Love&Deepspace - I got the new five-star Xavier card (HOT!!), and now have played different parts of the game more, i'm still in the beginning stages of the main story and i don't want to rush it because it's so interesting. I've read a bit about the lore but now i wanna get more into it. I also wanna read more sci-fi romance now!

The Testaments -
American tv-series adaptation of Margaret Atwood's spinoff of The Handmaiden. The main role is played by the lovely Chase Infiniti<3 I've only watched a few episodes so far but they're so well made i don't feel like i need to binge watch. It's been a while since i've watched "quality tv" so i'm savoring it.

The Drama (2026) - Ofc i had to watch the new Zendaya film. I knew nothing about it beforehand other than there's a wedding in the film and some mysterious drama. I'm not gonna spoil it but it's about a sensitive topic but it doesn't go that deep into it unfortunately(avoiding controversy?). It was interesting but not life changing. Zendaya and Robert Pattison were great in it though. There was one scene in the film I could relate to, something similar happened to me at a party too last weekend which i think was a funny coincidence, i might write about it more later.

Music
Kehlani - Kehlani
Slayyter - WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA
JT - Numb/Girls Gone Wild
FLO - Therapy At The Club

Food Diary
(new food)

+Stuff I'm waiting for in the future:

Beyonce's new album, maybe rock? or Prince vibes (more excited about this than Cowboy Carter)

The Vampire Lestat - Interview With The Vampire Season 3 NEXT MONTH!

RIPE!
- lesbian sport rom-com with Lola Tung<33! (sapphic heated rivalry YESS)

Painter of The Night live action BL - vertical drama on Lezhin Snack, out this month

LE SSERAFIM - PUREFLOW out next week!! I loved Celebration and Boompala teaser sounds so fun!

EVAN SOLO!!! just announced that a new single is out in the beginning of June!

+ PinkPantheress released a new music video:

I rarely vote for stuff but Enhypen and Le sserafim were nominated for AMAs so i also voted for PinkPantheress each time (she was nominated in 3 categories) she deserves to win!! Her album Fancy That was released year ago but it is still very much alive(idk how to say it better, sorry my English isn't working). I have the CD and I'm gonna get the LP for the remix album soon. Unfortunately she cancelled her concert at my country at this one music festival but i really hope she comes here for her own concert in the future.

3w4dw: Virtual Pets

[community profile] myrtillenne is one of my favourite Dreamwidth layout creators so I'm surprised at myself for finding out they made a new layout months after the fact. Nevertheless, I've changed my layout now, and changed my default icon to match the yellow accents. 😁

My grandparents have left for a short duration, and my aunt and uncle continue to stay here. I didn't post for 3w4dw the past few days (and now there's just a few days left). All my energy went towards trying to protect my energy, and now it feels as if a whirlwind has come and gone.

I changed my avatar on Kingdom of Knuffel and submitted it to this month's avatar contest.

I like how the snowballike/bubbly dress blends into the snowballike/bubbly hair. They're actually items from two different sets! It's the Doughnight '23 dress and the Drama Llama hair. The poofy little pet is from a different set too, it's the Skypuff Pet. The spell shapes in the background make it look like the pet was summoned. I built this avatar around this pet!

Speaking of pets, there are now a new set of pets you can get for your avatar and they're SO CUTE!

And you don't need in-game currency to get them, either! You can dig with your Knuffel (the site's adoptables) on Candy Island to find them.
